Gardening at Little Martins with Carol and Jon

September

Apples that we have collected from the garden at Little Martins

September seems to mark the high point for all of our hard work that we have put in through the year, but also, the month beckons on to the future. The borders may be a riotous, sensational blaze of colour, but this will soon change. As the dew appears on the grass in the mornings and there is that special sent of autumn in the air we know it is time to start thinking of planning and planting for next year, and beyond.

The weather is always a challenge for gardeners, but as we head in September over recent years we have been able to benefit from a period of stable weather in the early part of the month.

As August comes to a close we may begin to think that the summer is over, however instead we are often delighted by September's soft and sunny days. While the nights may be slightly chilly nights there are no shortage of late flowers to inject colour into the borders, and there is a comfortable reassurance that there are a few weeks left before we have to start to think about keeping warm.

We do start to see, however, the nights beginning to pull in, and to be cooler, with more dew and moisture in the mornings.

The garden, itself, starts on its final push of colour and produce before the quiet of the winter months, with beans, apples, courgettes and tomatoes all in abundance.
