Little Martin's Garden Diary
19th Apr 2009 - Preparing for our beans | | Here at Little Martins we like to grow our own produce where we can, and high
on the list of things that we like to grow are beans. We like lots of
them, and having only a small patch to grow them in means that we have to
undertake some preparation to the ground where we want to grow them.
 |
|
This year we decided to "double dig" the beds that we
will be growing our beans. Double digging means different things
to many people, in our mind, however, it means removing the top 10-12"
(25-30cm) soil, digging in organic matter into the next 10-12" (25-30cm)
and then replacing the top layer of soil, digging more organic material
as well. |
| Some of the organic material that we have included in the soil
includes newspapers, both the East Anglian Daily Times, we like to use
local resources where we can, and the Sunday Times, well ne need to keep
up the standards. |

Much of the organic material, however, comes from our
own compost, made from material collected over the previous year and
stored in one of the three compost bins that we have at Little Martins. |
